Should I Use Synthetic Motor Oil?

There are lots of choices when it comes to finding the best motor oil. The best synthetic motor oils are clearly superior to the conventional, petroleum based oils that are refined from crude oil.

They are stronger and withstand engine stresses better, improve engine performance and fuel economy, extend drain intervals, and protect vital, internal parts better than petroleum based oils.

They are better for the environment as a whole and diminish the use of precious natural resources, as well.

The question then becomes not which type of oil is superior, but which type and brand of synthetic oil is the best synthetic motor oil for one’s individual use.

Motor oil does more than just lubricate an engine.

It also forms a film on bearing surfaces that lifts and separates moving parts so they don’t touch to reduce friction and wear. The oil film also acts like a shock absorber to cushion reciprocating and rotating parts.

Motor oil also serves as a coolant for critical engine parts such as the crankshaft bearings and valve-train.

Motor oil also helps prevent rust and corrosion inside the engine, and helps keep surfaces clean by dissolving and carrying away dirt and varnish deposits.

Thinner oils have a water-like consistency and pour more easily at low temperatures than heavier, thicker oils that have a more honey-like consistency.

Thin is good for easier cold weather starting and reducing friction, while thick is better for maintaining film strength and oil pressure at high temperatures and loads.

Multi-viscosity oils flow well at low temperature for easier starting yet retain enough thickness and film strength at high temperature to provide adequate film strength and lubrication.

Multi-viscosity grade oils have a wide viscosity range which is indicated by a two-number rating.

The first number with the “W” refers to the oil’s cold temperature viscosity, while the second number refers to its high temperature viscosity.

Modern motor oils also contain detergents and dispersants to reduce varnish and sludge formation to keep the engine clean.

There are also “anti-oxidants” to minimize oil burning when the oil gets hot.

Rust and corrosion inhibitors are added to counteract the harmful effects of water, unburned fuel and exhaust gases that blow past the rings and enter the crankcase.

This prevents the formation of acids that can pit bearing surfaces “Foam inhibitors” are used to minimize the formation of air bubbles as the oil is churned by moving parts “Wetting agents” help the oil stick to hot surfaces so it doesn’t run off and leave the metal unlubricated and unprotected.

Finally, there are “anti-wear” and “extreme-pressure” additives.

Choosing the best synthetic motor oil to fit one’s individual situation can be done simply with a little research and simple math.

As long as the choice made has some synthetic protection included, it will be an excellent one for the vehicle in the long run.

By taking care of your oil you take care of your car’s engine resulting in fewer trips to the repair shop.

Since current engines are a great deal more complex than they were twenty five yrs ago, synthetic motor oil is turning into the number one choice for many auto industries.

Synthetic Motor Oil-Your Best Choice

There is a bit of misconception when it pertains to synthetic motor oil:

1 – They’re not as effective as conventional motor oil.
2 – They are excessively high-priced.
3 – In that respect there is no added benefit to utilizing synthetic motor oil,
4 – And so forth.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s Consumer Reports set about to answer a few of the misconceptions about synthetic motor oil during a two-year report, which utilised a number of city cabs. According to their report they concluded that there represented no more noticeable advantages utilizing synthetic motor oil over conventional motor oil. Nevertheless they noted that taxicabs don’t encounter a lot of stone-cold starts or abundant periods of time of fast motoring. In reality the examination was better for typical motoring circumstances, that represent stop-and-go traffic. They decided that synthetic motor oil would be most advantageous in automobiles that are utilized in intense motoring circumstances, such as high-level temperatures, real frigid and endless points of high-level motoring. Still in that respect there are a lot of good points and bad points for the conventional driver when it concerns utilizing synthetic motor oil over conventional motor oil. Present are but a few:

GOOD POINTS
1 – With synthetic motor oil you are able to profit by lengthier oil change intervals.

2 – Synthetic motor oil will step-up the lifetime span of your engine.

3 – Once it concerns intense motoring circumstances, synthetic motor oil reacts more effective in high-level temperatures and real low-level temperatures.

BAD POINTS
1 – To profit by the expanded life span, synthetic motor oil ought actually be applied from the get-go of your engines life. Whenever your engine is already at one hundred thousand miles or more, you in all likelihood will not encounter any lengthened life because of the harm by conventional motor oil that has already been done.

2 – At this time synthetic motor oil is costlier than conventional motor oil.

3 – Fresh engines involve a break-in period, generally around 5,000 miles and since synthetic motor oil features a more superior viscousness it’s generally not utilized in a fresh engine.

Synthetic motor oil has been used since the late 1930’s once the German scientist Dr. Hermann Zornteri invented it. The 1st synthetic motor oil constituted use in German aircraft engines in World War 2. By the middle 1960’s Chevron represented the first company to develop a complete multi grade motor oil from one hundred percent synthetic oils. While synthetic oil, which was used in the aerospace industry for many years didn’t come to being accessible for automotive engines till the American Petroleum Institute (API) okayed the process. In 1972 Amsoil distributed among the 1st synthetic motor oils for automobiles, which represented their 10W-40.

Since current engines are a great deal more complex than they were twenty five yrs ago, synthetic motor oil is turning into the number one choice for many auto industries. In fact Porsche represented the 1st auto maker to factory-fill its engines with synthetic motor oil. Straight crude based oil, experiences a inclination to break down quicker than synthetic oil does. Since synthetic motor oil is compiled of chemical compounds that are artificially constructed it is more often than not outstanding to conventional motor oil.

Synthetic motor oils are very much more beneficial for today’s advanced engines; even Porsche believes so, particularly in motoring circumstances with extreme temperatures. While the present-day cost might be to a higher degree more in cost than conventional motor oil, a lot of manufactures are making the change to synthetic oil and the cost is sure to drop down. Finally it is your alternative, unless your owners manual says differently.

As a predictive maintenance tool, oil analysis is used to uncover, isolate and offer solutions for abnormal lubricant and machine conditions. These abnormalities, if left unchecked, usually result in extensive, sometimes catastrophic damage causing lost production, extensive repair costs, and even operator accidents.

The goal of a world-class oil analysis program is to increase the reliability and availability of your machinery, while minimizing maintenance costs associated with oil changeouts, labor, repairs and downtime. Accomplishing your goal takes time, training and patience. However, the results are dramatic and the documented savings in cost avoidance are significant.

What are Lubricants

Industrial oils are specifically designed fluids composed of a base oil and a compliment of additives. The base oil performs these functions, including forms a fluid film between moving parts in order to reduce friction and wear; carries away contaminants to the filter; and removes heat generated within the machine. Additives are chemical components added to the base oil to significantly enhance the performance characteristics of the lubricating oil. Typical enhanced properties include oxidation stability, wear protection, and corrosion inhibition.

Why Analyze Used Lubricants

There are three aspects of oil analysis, contaminants, lubricant conditions and machine wear. Ingressed contaminants from the surrounding environment in the form of air, dirt, water and process contamination are the leading cause of machine degradation and failure. Increased contamination alerts you to take action in order to save the oil and avoid unnecessary machine wear.

The assessment of the lubricant condition reveals whether the system fluid is healthy and fit for further service, or is ready for a change. Lastly, an unhealthy machine generates wear particles at an exponential rate. The detection and analysis of these particles assist in making critical maintenance decisions. Machine failure due to worn out components can be avoided. Remember, healthy and clean oil lead to the minimization of machine wear.

How Lube Oils Fail

Typically lubricant oils fail as a result of contamination, oil degradation and additive depletion. Contamination is usually caused by external sources like dirt, water, and process related liquids or materials or internal sources like machine wear and degradation by-products. Lubricant oils also fail because of oil degradation, or oxidation. It is where atmospheric oxygen combines with hydrocarbon molecules. The hotter the oil and the greater exposure to air, the faster oxidation proceeds. The initial by-products of oxidation are sludges and varnishes. However, further oxidation converts these by-products into carboxylic acids. These acids then aggressively attack and corrode many machine component surfaces. In addition, lube oils fail because of additive depletion, which are consumed or chemically changed while performing their function. The performance characteristics of the lubricant are altered and the enhanced properties are wiped out.

What Oil Analysis Measures

Oil analysis measures the physical and chemical properties of the oil, contamination and mechanical wear. You can uncover contamination or degradation by trending rates of change in selected lube properties, such as viscosity, acid number, particle counting, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Karl Fischer water. Oil analysis also measures mechanical wear, which uncovers machine related problems using ICP spectroscopy, wear particle concentration, and analytical ferrography.

Which GPS Is Rated The Best

Author: Julius Roberts

If you are looking into the purchase of a GPS navigation system there are many choices to look over. I know it is hard to make a decision about something with so many choices available. I have spent many hours researching GPS systems. I have been to all the department stores and talked for many hours to countless techies to come to a single conclusion. Which GPS is rated the best for you! That’s right!

GPS systems have come so far as to have mp3 players and cell phone transmitters. If you or your gift recipient happen to be into the latest and greatest technology then connecting all of your electronic gadgets will be part of the thrill. If you are more inclined to be a plug and go kind of person there are units better suited for that. Whatever your technology level GPS systems are fun and extremely useful tools.

Lets use and example! Let’s say you are a garage sale junkie. Every weekend you scour the newspaper or craigslist for the best deals. Well, I am sure you know that getting to these first often results in finding the best items at the cheapest price. So imagine jumping into your vehicle turning the key and simply stated your desired destination. Within a matter of seconds you hear a voice reply telling you exactly which way to go, how far until your turn, what lane is best to be in for a merge and how long based on your typical driving habits it will take to arrive. Seriously these things make sure you know your in the 21st century.

So I am sure you are wondering which is best. Well that is up to you. It depends if you want to have your blackberry synched with your microsoft outlook while you talk on your blutooth in stereo listening to your mp3’s. Or you are just looking to have a simple one button push screen that will get you where you need to go with the least amount of confusion. I have created a review of some of the best rated GPS systems for you to look over.

Garmin GPS Devices All the Way!

Author: Jayson Pablo

Founded on the principles of innovation, convenience, performance, value, and service, Garmin products are today known for their excellence. The company has a very simple goal of creating navigation and communication devices that can enrich the consumers’ lives. What began as a brainstorming session of a handful of engineers around a card table in 1989 has evolved into a worldwide collaborative effort involving thousands of colleagues. The innovative products span various areas including automotive, aviation, marine, fitness, outdoor recreation and wireless applications.

The secret to the success of Garmin isn’t even that much of a secret. From the time that the founders focused on selling their first product using GPS (Global Positioning System), Garmin has hired and surrounded itself with creative minds and passionate spirits.

Garmin’s GPS systems have found a vast range of users since their introduction to the public in 1989. Widely used as Vehicle tracking devices, they can let you know where you are going, where you are presently and how to get to a certain destination. Garmin’s hand-held GPS systems are among the top liners in GPS systems. Its products like panel-mount GPS, moving maps, and GPS/cellular phones are the talk of the town these days.

On the road products used in automotive, motorcycles and traffic receivers help drivers reach their destination effortlessly while getting the most out of the journey. Marine units supplement detailed charts with essential data. Aviation technology provides everything pilots need at a glance. On the fitness front the devices make every step of the workout more efficient. Wireless applications bringing the power of Garmin GPS devices to the smart phones are most popular ones.

From aviation to marine, automotive to fitness, wireless solutions to outdoor recreation, Garmin devices are in the air, on the water, in the woods, behind the wheel and on the run.

GPS systems have come a long way since they were first designed for the US millitary. The first signal from NAVSTAR 1 was received on Feb. 22, 1978. NAVSTAR 1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was the first of 24 satellites that make up the Global Positioning System (). The first generation of satellites that make up the Global Positioning Systems 24 satellites were launched between Feb. 22, 1978 and Oct. 9, 1985. Since it First became operational the Global Positioning Systems has revolutionized the way America goes to war and provides a system in which the world relies on for precise navigation.

The Global Positioning System’s constellation of orbiting satellites is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. The unit is the host wing at Schriever Air Force Base, located in east Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are responsible for tracking and maintaining the command and control, warning, navigational, and communications satellites for Air Force Space Command as well as the Global Positioning System satellites. Full Operational Capability was declared by NAVSTAR in April 1995 (NAVSTAR is an acronym for NAVigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, and is the official U.S. Government name given to the satellite system).

The US government granted the Global Positioning System available for civilian use in the late 1980s and with no subscription fees or setup charges to use the system the civilian market exploded, especially in the last decade. A new generation of sophisticated satellites are replacing the older satellites and there are now 34 satellites in orbit that provide combat capability for military applications and aircraft navigation aids. Civilian applications include ATM’s, bank and stock market transactions as well as power grid management. Currently 31 of the 34 satellites in orbit transmit navigation and timing signals to civilian and military users around the world.

for civilian use

The civilian system wasn’t always as it is today and the US military is still keeping the most accurate Global Positioning Systems available classified for national security. But upgrades for two new civilian signals to enhanced user accuracy and reliability, particularly with respect to aviation safety were planned in 1998. Then on May 2, 2000 “Selective Availability” was discontinued as a result of the 1996 executive order, allowing users to receive a non-degraded signal globally, and in 2004 QUALCOMM announced the successful tests of assisted for mobile phones that led the way for the aided cell phones that are widely used today.

In 2005, the first third generation satellite was launched and began transmitting a second civilian signal for enhanced user performance. Then in September of 2007 the Air Force completed a four-phase transition of the Global Positioning Systems ground segment to it’s new Architecture Evolution Plan. The ground segment’s provide command and control of the satellites and generates the navigation message for satellites to broadcast to the users device to calculate their earth’s position. The new satellites include new high-powered, anti-jam military-code, along with other accuracy, reliability, and data integrity improvements for both civil and military users. This modernized version of the world’s greatest free utility was designed to ensure the US has the most precise and secure positioning, navigation and timing capability through 2030.

Europe and Russia develop their own

In 2004 the United States signed an agreement with the European Community establishing cooperation with Europe’s planned Galileo system. Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is currently being built by the European Union and is separate from but complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. The European Union’s Galileo system should be operational by 2013. The European Community’s political aim is to provide an independent system that the European nations can rely on in times of war or political disagreement, because both Russia or the USA could disable use of their national systems by others (through encryption).

The Russian system GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system that was developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. Like the European system the Russian system also functions separate from but is complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. Russia began launching satellites for their system into space on October 12, 1982 and was completed in 1995. The system rapidly fell into disrepair fallowing the collapse of the Russian economy but in 2001 the Russian government began restoring the system with hopes of restoring global coverage by the end of 2009.

Systems today

Depending on the unit a receiver only needs a signal from 3-4 satellites to calculate the units position and will work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or set up fees like with a cell phone to operate receivers and although some receivers have extra features like real time traffic updates that will have a monthly charge, some receivers like Garmins Nuvi “T” series come with free live traffic for the life of the unit. Today’s is extremely accurate thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. Garmin’s 12 parallel channel receivers are very quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain a strong lock even in dense foliage or city’s with tall buildings because they continuously track signals from up to 12 satellites at any given time. Even if a 12 parallel channel receiver loses signals from 8 satellites at once it will still function properly.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Global Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on for all phases of flight, including the precision approach to airport’s within its coverage area. All though originally intended for aviation most receivers today are WAAS-enabled including automotive, boating chartplotters and hand-held units. WAAS uses a network of ground based reference stations, in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in the satellites’ signals. Measurements from these reference stations are routed to master stations and then they send correction messages to geostationary WAAS satellites. Those satellites then broadcast the correction messages back to Earth, where WAAS-enabled receivers use the correction data while computing their positions to improve accuracy. WAAS enabled receivers are accurate to within 3 meters and that make them the most accurate receivers for civilian use on the market today. In fact a WAAS-enabled receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is traveling in (as long as the mapping program supports “lane assist” directions) and With no additional equipment or fees required to take advantage of WAAS-enabled receivers they are becoming as common as cell phone’s.

Protecting Your Investment With The Best Motor Oil

Author: Vincent Platania

A person’s automobile is the single most important financial investment and obligation in the modern age. Few people can survive without a reliable means of transportation. Getting oneself to and from their occupation on time and without fail is one of the most imperative, underlying keys to financial freedom and success. Protecting this investment with the proper preventative maintenance will lead to fewer repairs, a longer vehicle life, and increased financial savings in the long run. Most people understand that the oil in their engine must be changed at regular mileage intervals, but few know how important finding the best motor oil for their vehicle truly is. Even fewer people know what capabilities the newer synthetic oils possess in adding life to one’s engine and ultimately better protecting their financial investment.

With the many choices on the market today, finding the best motor oil for one’s vehicle can seem like a daunting task. For those customers that know little about cars but still wish to do the best thing for their vehicles, the solution is simple. Synthetic oil is the always the superior option. The financial benefits far outweigh the extra cost when considering substituting synthetic oils for the conventional, petroleum based oils in all of a vehicle’s components. Synthetic oil’s chemically engineered, uniform molecular structure flows better, withstands extreme temperatures and frictions inside engines and transmissions better, and holds it’s viscosity between drain intervals better than traditional oils. Petroleum based oils break down and vaporize quicker between oil changes, leaving behind a thicker oil filled with harmful byproducts. These byproducts will attach themselves to vital, moving parts in the form of deposits, slowly wearing these parts prematurely over time.

Synthetic oils contain additives and detergents that help keep engines and transmissions running cleaner, their rotating and moving parts wearing less with use, and passageways freer from sludge and deposit build-up. This will increase and maintain better engine performance which will improve fuel economy. One of the leading names in synthetic oil production, AMSOIL, suggests an increase of 2 to 5%. It is clear that the best motor oil for the protection of one’s most important financial investment, their vehicle, is a synthetic oil. It will lengthen the life of the vehicle, decrease the amount of engine and transmission repairs needed over it’s lifespan, and even increase gas mileage. With today’s high gas prices, the money saved in increased fuel economy alone will make up for the extra cost of synthetic oils, the protection of a precious, necessary vehicle is an enormous bonus.

Motor oils are comprised of two parts, the base oil and additive package. The base oil comprises 80-90% of the oil by volume and the additives the remaining 10-20%. There are five groups of base oils: Group I, II, III, IV and V. Groups I to III are refined from crude oil containing tars, asphalts, waxes, aromatics and other “bad things”. These crude oils are “cleaned up”, to the extent possible, by hydrocracking, filtering and hydroisomerization. The group III base oils are the best of this genre. However, they still contain variably-sized molecules and some contaminants that can result in sludge, varnish and other deposits in your engine. Moreover, the quality of group III base oils vary greatly due to differences in the combination of feedstocks and refining methods utilized.

Synthetic oils are group IV Polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and group V (esters) base oils. Both pao-oil and ester oil are synthetic oils that are “man-made” synthesized uniform molecular structures that significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these oils relative to their petroleum oil competitors. More specifically, these synthetic oils have significantly lower coefficients of friction, thermal (heat) and pour-point (cold weather performance) properties than do petroleum oils. Finally, synthetic oils have no waxes, tars, or other contaminants to sludge or varnish your engine.

While synthetic lubricants are initially more expensive, when you consider their extended oil and engine-life extension capabilities, in addition to their improved performance, then you have only one choice and that choice is synthetic oil, and that oil is AMSOIL. These oils are definitively the best synthetic motor oil.

Petroleum oils are produced in an oil refinery, where crude oil is separated into fractions. These fractions become the basis for lubricating oils and fuels. Thick tangled masses of carbon chains become asphaltic materials used in roofing tar and road work; whereas, short molecular chain and ring compounds of carbon are volatile and can be refined into gasoline and other types of products.

Petroleum refining is a complex science, wherein, contaminants, as mentioned earlier; including sulfur and other reactive hydrocarbons, cannot be completely removed from the crude oil. Thus, these contaminants remain in petroleum oil base stocks.

The advantages of AMSOIL are hardly limited to extreme conditions, but rather from their strength in day-to-day use. At the core of AMSOIL’s synthetic lubricants is the ability to provide superior lubrication. That means engines and machinery operate more efficiently, with less friction. Less friction means less heat produced and less wear and tear on mechanical parts, which allow engines and machinery to have much longer life spans. The increase in operating efficiency also means an increase in power and fuel efficiency, since your equipment is not fighting against itself and friction.

AMSOIL is one of the least expensive and smartest investments you will ever make to insure that your motorized equipment will run the longest with the least amount of maintenance and the highest fuel efficiency. Lubricating oils are the lifeblood of mechanical equipment, and are the single most determining factor in how long your equipment will last, and what the costs of maintaining that equipment will be.

Synthetic Motorcycle Oil – Your Best Protection

Author: Vincent Platania

Motorcycles are as equally deserving of high-quality lubricants as automobiles. In fact, many motorcycle engines operate at up to 10 000 revolutions per minute – almost double that of a typical motor in a passenger car. At these types of speeds, the stresses in an engine are extremely high, and it is important to choose the right oil to protect internal components.

Synthetic motorcycle oil can really go a long way towards protecting your engine, chain case and transmission. Since most motorcycles are pleasure vehicles that are not driven every day, or not usually driven for extended periods, the amount of time a bike spends parked means that motorcycles are particularly prone to rust issues resulting from storage. Humid conditions can also accelerate the formation of rust, leading to corrosion in the engine and on the chain. Many people assume that since their engine and chain are oiled that they are protected against this type of damage, but in order for an oil to provide maximum protection against corrosion, it must contain special additives which are designed to coat and protect at all times. Synthetic motorcycle oil is specifically formulated with these additives.

Aside from the stress of high-engine rpm’s, the most damage done to a typical motorcycle engine is during cold startup. When a bike’s engine has been sitting overnight, all of the engine oil drains down out of the motor and into the oil pan. This means that for a few crucial moments on startup, the engine is rotating without any protection from oil. Of course, engine builders realize this and all motors are designed to achieve necessary oil pressure and coverage almost immediately after ignition. However, the type of oil being used can play a significant role in terms of how fast that actually occurs. Synthetic motorcycle oil is less prone to reduced viscosity in low temperatures, meaning that it does not thicken up and flow less while cold. This allows it to move faster through your motor on start-up and begin protecting engine components before standard motor oil would be able to achieve optimal viscosity.
When choosing a motorcycle lubricant, each of these issues needs to be considered. When parking a bike for the week after a weekend of hard riding, the peace of mind that everything will be ready to go when you hit the starter next Friday is priceless. Synthetic oil is the key to getting the maximum life and pleasure out of a motorcycle.

5 Facts About Changing your Oil

Author: Denise Palmer

When was the last time the manufacturer of your car went out of their way to tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles?

Isn’t it funny that in fact, automotive manufacturers have not agreed with this “opinion” for more than 20 years.

So WHO created the “change your oil every 3,000 miles” rule anyway? And why, have we as consenting adults, with brains and knowledge of our own, bought into it for so many years?

Let’s take a look at the “reasons” we’ve all heard, time and time again about why we SHOULD change our oil every 3,000 miles.

We’re told:

1) Oil breaks down after 3000 miles

2) Oil changes are great preventative maintenance

3) 3,000 miles is an easy number for the car repair customer to remember

4) The 3,000 mile interval is traditionally viewed as best by mechanics

5) It’s necessary due to the elements, driving patterns, and weather conditions.

But when we really look at the people, or entities that are URGING us to change our oil every 3,000 miles, we realize, they are the same people and companies that profit the most from us following their lead.

This is not to say that oil changes aren’t important – they are. They’re just not as frequently needed as we’re made to believe.

Here are 5 FACTS about the 3,000 mile oil change myth.

1) Quality motor oil recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer does not break down after 3,000 miles

2) Yes, changing your oil is great preventative maintenance, but it should be done in accordance with the manufacturer service intervals

3) The easy-to-remember 3,000-mile interval actually creates more confusion as to the real maintenance needs of your vehicle. Thus, it is easier to follow factory guidelines, more economical, and more appropriate.

4) The traditional view that 3,000 miles is best for your car is old school, wasteful, and fails to appreciate today’s mechanical and oil technologies

5) Unless you’re in a constant high-speed police change in the dead of winter – your oil will be just fine

So with all of that said, it begs the question; how often do you really need to change your oil? While it depends on the year, make, and model of your vehicle, it’s clear that for today’s vehicles it’s not every 3,000 miles. 20 years ago this was true of many vehicles. However, this is virtually obsolete as most vehicle have 5,000, 7500, 10,000, and even 15,000 mile oil service intervals.

So just what is motivating the auto industry to push 3,000 mile oil changes? Let’s look at it in real life. If you change your oil every 3,000 miles, and like most, you average 15,000 miles per year, then you’ll be in the repair shop 5 times in only 12 months. Do you really need to perform maintenance on your car 5 times per year? Seems excessive doesn’t it?

The average oil change price is $30.00. $30.00 X 5 = $150.00. If you changed your oil every 5,000 miles, you’d only need 3 oil changes per year = $90. That’s a $60 savings. And not to mention all the “extra’s” you are pressured to buy into while getting your oil changed. See below for more on these.

For the most part oil changes are cheap, as it’s a very competitive market. They’re also not very profitable for repair shops. However, the more times your vehicle is in the shop, the more chances that shop has to sell you something else – an alignment, tires, wiper blades, brakes, shocks, fuel cleaning services, transmission services…etc – these are money-makers. This is not to say that these services aren’t needed, but they should be performed according to manufacturer guidelines only and performed by only a certified repair company.

A detailed manufacturer’s maintenance schedule (this is separate from your manual) is the best and most accurate guide. You may stumble across one in all the unnecessary paperwork you find in your glove box, but ask your repair shop or dealer for a detailed print out of your entire maintenance schedule. If the service center can’t produce one quickly – you’re in the wrong place for your car’s needs.

Finally, have a little fun: the next time your local mechanic tells you to change your oil every 3,000 miles, ask him what the manufacturer recommends. It’s fun to watch him stumble through the answer or tell you, straight-faced, the wrong answer.

Is the 3,000-Mile Oil Change Necessary Or Is It Just Marketing?

by Mike Reitz

How often should you change the oil in your car?

If you automatically guess 3,000 miles you could be wrong.

When I was 16 and bought my first cool car, my dad taught me to change the oil every 3,000 miles, no matter what! He taught me that because my Grandfather taught him.

But is it really necessary?

I think that the “3,000 Mile Oil Change” theory made sense years ago, but with most recent cars, 5,000 miles is probably plenty. However, there are a few vehicles that may go as high as 12,000 miles between oil changes.

Many new cars have a technology where the car actually tells the driver when to change the oil.

Cars that currently have this variable/indicator light are GM, Honda and Chrysler.

And, recently I read about a company that is developing an oil-purifying technology that will push the oil-change interval to 30,000 miles! If their product comes to fruition, imagine the impact that this would have on the oil-change industry!

Believe it or not, Shell Lubricants, which owns the Quaker State and Pennzoil oil brands and operates the Jiffy Lube oil-change chain, long ago abandoned its corporate-wide 3,000-mile-oil-change message.

However, when I checked the Jiffy-Lube website, they now use an offer as a Bonus to receive FREE top-offs on motor oil or any other fluids for life if you change your oil every 3,000 miles!

Another marketing tactic!

It really does depend on the individual driver and how you use your vehicle! You are subjecting your vehicle to “severe driving conditions” if you do any of the following types of driving:

* Multiple short trips * Stop and go driving * Cold weather * Hot weather * Dusty conditions * Tow trailers * Heavy loads

Another thought, from an environmental perspective, is to look at the enormous amount of oil we could save by going from every 3,000 miles to say 5,000! There is no point in wasting precious oil changing it prematurely. And, we wouldn’t have to dispose of so much waste oil, either!

My friend Donna, who lives in Florida, does mostly freeway driving and prefers to change her oil every 3,000 miles.

There are two reasons for this:

First: Because of the extreme heat in Florida.

And Second: Being a single lady she likes to have the peace of mind knowing that her car has been checked out under the hood every 3,000 miles. During the oil change, she has the mechanic check her tires, breaks, hoses, belts, and other fluids.

And, let’s face it; most of us have the best of intentions of getting our oil changed when it is due. But, how often do you decide it is time to change the oil and then put it off for another 1,000 miles or so?

The average oil change today is $25.00, or about $100.00 for 4 changes a year, since the average driver puts on 12,000 miles per year. That $100.00 is about what a tow bill is today if you have a break down because you didn’t have your car looked over and make sure things are okay.

My suggestion would be to look at your owner’s manual, and follow the Manufacturer’s guide to best determine your oil-change interval. And, be sure to take into consideration, whether or not your vehicle is subject to severe driving conditions.

Happy motoring!

How to Change an Oil Filter

Author: Levi Quinn

A simple as it looks, an oil filter is not that simple to change and the process has various steps that have to be followed to ensure that it is done in the correct way. Without following the laid out procedure, one is likely to cause damage to the device or its surrounding components. When beginning the process of changing an oil filter, the device has to first be located and it is situated near the engine oil pan. The oil filter is then removed by unscrewing it counter clockwise using an appropriate locking wrench. It is important to use gloves as well as protective eye wear for this procedure. Once the oil filter is safely out, the oil that is inside it should be let to drain out into the oil catch pan. After this, the filter seal surface should be cleaned and the sealing gasket for the used filter should be removed from the surface on which the filter seat is mounted.

A small amount of oil should be applied onto the new filter’s rubber gasket. The new filter can then be screwed clockwise by hand, until a point when it is tightly secure in place. Once this is done, the plug for oil pan drain should be detached using a wrench while keeping ready for it to be dislodged. It is recommended to use the completed or boxed end of the wrench so that the drain pug is not rounded. This procedure can also be done with a socket wrench. Once the plug is dislodged, the sealing washer should be inspected for wear and tear. In case it is worn out or broken then a replacement is needed. The oil should then be let to drain completely then replace the drain plug securely and then wipe it clean. Note that the plug should not be too secured too tightly rather it should just fit snugly.

When the oil filter has been replaced and all the engine oil drained, motor oil should be added in the fill port which is situated on the valve cover of the car engine and is usually clearly marked. If the port is in a difficult place to reach then a funnel may be used to lead the oil in. Approximately, four quartz should be poured in the engine and the cap replaced. The car should then be run for a duration of about one minute and then shut off. The vehicle should then stand for about two minutes for all the oil to settle and the oil level checked using the dip stick. Make sure that the oil is at the required point on the indicator. If more oil is needed it should be added at this point.

The clarity of the oil should also be observed, and if the oil has a light tint then the car is fine but if it has a dark color like coca cola the vehicle may need servicing. If a car has a defective oil filter, then the car is likely to get carbon particles within the engine and cause malfunction. It is vital to change the oil filter from time to time to ensure the car functions as required.

Benefits of Synthetic Oils

Author: Vincent Platania

If you’re considering synthetic automobile oils, you may be wondering what the point is. Aren’t there plenty of perfectly good motor oils derived from natural petroleum? Since the regular stuff seems to work just fine, why would someone go to the trouble of making synthetic oil to begin with?

It’s a fair question. But as it turns out, developing synthetic automobile oils wasn’t a complete waste of scientists’ time. The best synthetic motor oil can provide significant advantages over conventional oils, especially in modern high-performance engines.

Synthetics’ biggest advantage is that they’re designed from the ground up for their specific purpose. Conventional oil is slippery and, for a long time, that was enough. But as modern engines have gotten more complicated, they’ve placed tougher demands on their lubricants. Modern engines are built from specialized materials to reduce weight. They run to tighter tolerances. And they run faster and hotter.

Out of the ground, petroleum is a stew of different hydrocarbons used for everything from gasoline to plastic. Enormous refinery complexes go to a lot of effort to sort out different types of molecules. It’s like trying to take apart a bowl of vegetable soup.

The refining process gets rid of most of the things that don’t belong in a motor oil, but a lot of molecules remain. From your engine’s point of view, these leftover hydrocarbons are useless at best and at worst actually troublesome.

These other molecules can gum up the oil, they can cause it to lose viscosity at low temperatures, and at high temperatures they can break down into a chemical sludge that interferes with the oil’s lubricating properties. Synthetics have none of these issues. In especially demanding high-performance applications, the best synthetic motor oil can make all the difference.

Even for everyday driving, synthetic automobile oils can offer some pretty significant benefits. You’d be surprised where you’ll find high performance engines these days. As car makers push the envelope on weight and fuel efficiency, the engine of the regular family car is getting more sophisticated and more demanding.

So whether you’re racing the Baja or driving the kids to school, the best synthetic motor oil can keep your car running better longer, improve your gas mileage, and reduce your emissions. In general, they just help your car do what it does better.

Synthetic or Conventional Motor Oil, Which is best for you?

by Jim Zamjohn

Conventional motor oil is made of fossil oil while synthetic motor oil is made from compounds that are synthesized or made by artificial means from other compounds. Synthetic oil is used to replace standard motor oil for a couple of reasons. Synthetic oil provides high-performance protection in a greater range of temperatures, it’s more cost-efficient over time, and it doesn’t take fossil oil for production. One of the advantages of man-made oil is that it’s much more resistant to heat and deterioration than conventional oil. Because it’s produced by artificial means, the properties of synthetic oil can be produced to surpass conventional oil in overall performance. Initially synthetic oil was developed for industrial engines that operated at higher temperature than conventional engines since people required oil that was able to withstanding greater levels of heat than conventional oil would be able to function at without burning.

Although synthetic oil was developed to function at hotter than normal temperatures, it also performs well in colder than normal temperatures also. In extreme cold normal oil can solidify causing difficulty in starting an engine and even causing damage in some cases. Synthetic oil is less susceptible to both hot and cold temperature, flowing and protecting engines a great deal easier at a broader range of temperatures.

The cost of synthetic oil is what keeps a lot of consumers from using it in their vehicles on a regular basis. Because of the complex synthesizing process used to produce synthetic oil it’s costlier than conventional oil by twice as much or more. Nonetheless, because synthetic oil is designed to be more long-lasting than conventional oil, drivers don’t need to perform oil changes as often with synthetic oil which can wind up saving them money in the long run.

For many people conventional oil works o.k. to protect their vehicle provided it’s changed at the recommended interval. Synthetic oil will extend the oil change interval in any engine and provide more beneficial protection in a greater range of climates. Synthetic oil is most beneficial for use in vehicles that require uncommon considerations such as race cars, trucks that haul heavy loads, automobiles that operate in extremely hot or cold temperatures, and any vehicle that requires extended engine life.

There are a lot of reasons why synthetic oil is best, and initial cost aside it generally saves consumers money while giving their engines longer life and better performance. If you would like to go longer between oil changes and give your vehicle’s engine the finest protection possible select synthetic oil.

A tuner’s engine is designed to run at high rpm’s and provide maximum power with small displacement. Synthetic oil is designed to achieve maximum protection under all operating conditions.

Why You Should Spend the Extra Money on Synthetic Oil?

Author: Vincent P Platania

The import tuner scene is the hottest trend on the streets today. These guys know what they want from their cars and are not afraid to spend the money to get it. Like the muscle cars of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the tuners’ roots hail from the hot rods of the prohibition era, where moonshiners first modified their cars in hopes of outrunning the police. Even back then, the original “street racers” knew how important it was to keep their engines well lubed.

Technology has come a long way since the days of moonshiners. Cars now have very tight tolerances and produce much more horsepower. The oil has improved quite a bit, too. The latest in lubrication technology is synthetic oil. Synthetic oils are designed to perform under high stress, high heat, and close-tolerance applications. If you tried using the same oil that was used by the moonshiners’ hot rods, your car would perform below expectations. Why use old technology oil for high-technology cars? I can’t think of a reason, considering all of the benefits of using a synthetic.

A tuner’s engine is designed to run at high rpm’s and provide maximum power with small displacement. Synthetic oil is designed to achieve maximum protection under all operating conditions. The appearance and dominance of the tuner in today’s street scene is only a hint of where the sport is heading. The days of bigger engines and more fuel are fading away, and we are venturing into an era where the fuel economy of a vehicle is just as important as the power it produces. Is this coming together for you? Are you seeing a point to this yet? Just like leaded gasoline, conventional oils are fading away, too. Conventional oils do a good job of lubricating your engine, but unlike a synthetic, they do not perform the same under extremes. Conventional oil thins as it gets hot, thickens as it cools, and boils off creating sludge and oil loss, and it doesn’t protect as long as a synthetic would.

A tuner enthusiast knows how precise his engine has to be to perform at its best. He knows that he gets better power at higher rpm’s. He knows that if he wants his engine, the heart of his machine, to last, it needs the best protection available. Synthetic is the only logical choice in a machine like this. A synthetic may cost more than your conventional oil, but in that cost is a savings as well. While a synthetic might cost twice as much as a conventional, it also protects longer, better, and improves fuel economy as well.

I know what you are thinking, a “tuner” represents a small portion of the market, and most of these guys probably do their own work. That doesn’t matter; the tuners use the same types of engines as normal cars. They might have some modifications, and they are put under extra stress, but they are essentially the same compact cars that the rest of America drives daily. Why would an oil that has so many great benefits for a tuner not be helpful to the average car? That’s like saying the vitamins that top athletes take would have no benefit for you. Great oil is great oil, no matter what the application is. If a synthetic will help a tuner get better gas mileage, better oil life, and increased engine longevity, the benefits would be even greater for the car that isn’t exposed to the demands that a tuner is expected to meet. Making a presence in the tuner market can only have positive outcomes. All great performance advancements in the automotive industry were discovered and perfected on the racetrack, and then they migrated to the street. Synthetic lubricants have proven themselves to perform for the cars that demand the best. Performance on the track equals performance on the street.
