There are many different opinions on whether synthetic motor oil or conventional motor oil is best. Each type of motor oil has advantages and disadvantages and one type may be right for some people while others would benefit more from a different kind.

One advantage that makes synthetic motor oil best is that it can be used for all weather temperatures from extreme hot to extreme cold so you don’t have to use a different oil viscosity based on the season. If you do not live in a climate that experiences extreme temperatures you will not need synthetic motor oil for this reason, however.

Another advantage of synthetic motor oil is that is runs cleaner than conventional motor oil because it is produced from chemicals instead of natural ingredients. It does not leave traces of contaminants and debris such as sulfur, wax, and grit buildup the way that conventional motor oil does.

The age and condition of a vehicle is another reason many people choose synthetic motor oil. Synthetic motor oil is said to make vehicles run much smoother, especially older ones. Older vehicles get the most benefit from synthetic motor oils and there are many specially formulated synthetic motor oils to choose from. Synthetic motor oil is not always recommended for new vehicles, however, especially during the breaking in period.

Synthetic motor oil does cost more than conventional motor oil making for a more expensive oil change. However, the higher cost of the synthetic motor oil is often offset by the fact that you can go longer between oil changes with and the increased protection offered by synthetic motor oil helps prevent build up and better protects the engine, which can reduce the number of repairs needed in a vehicle. These benefits can save you money in the long run.

Many drivers who have used conventional motor oil for years have gotten along just fine without using synthetic motor oil. The less expensive oil has always kept their vehicle running in good condition and they are happy with their vehicle’s performance and maintenance schedule.

While synthetic motor oil is not necessary for every vehicle, it is clearly best in certain situations such as for vehicles that operate in very hot or very cold temperatures, for high mileage vehicles that need extra protection, and for people who want to preserve the life of their engine. If you have any of these special considerations synthetic motor oil is probably the best type of oil for you.
